The Toolbox, 2005 - present
A collection of software for composer Richard Karpen that creates a flexible environment for interactive music with live electronics. In recent years, Karpen has decided to make new works through intense sessions with performers where all decisions about the works are made in the days leading up to a performance. The current state of The Toolbox is a highly efficient, modular, real-time sound program created with the SuperCollider programming language on Mac OS X that communicates via wireless network with a dynamic multi-touch controller program (OUI) on the iPad.
Recent works by Richard Karpen that have used the Toolbox are the Karpen / Vu project featuring Richard Karpen on piano and the Cuong Vu trio and the Idioms project with Teatr Weimar. Earlier versions of the Toolbox were also used for Karpen's compositions 'Strand Lines' for guitar and live electronics and 'Aperture' for viola and live electronics.
